Up just after 5.00 to try and get to the Ngorongoro Crater as soon as possible as our landrovers were waiting to take us down into the crater for a game drive. We had five landrovers hired, and saw lions, (our first male ones), hyenas, hippos, elephants, etc., etc. The kids enjoyed the experience of a safari by landrover, (standing up with heads out of the canopies etc.), and Claire certainly took to the role of being the 'Mama' with great gusto!
We had lunch at Karatu where we met up with the truck again, and then it was off to Meserani Snake Park, Arusha, for our next five nights. I had booked a barbecue for tonight, and it was well received.
In one sense it has been a nightmare few days, with one major problem after the other, (we have camped in unexpected places, dealt with corrupt police officers and border officials, and experienced a potentially horrific traffic accident), but this is what this trip is all about. When you are travelling independently through Africa, you can expect things to go wrong now and again – it is how you deal with it that matters, and in this respect your sons and daughters have been amazing. They have adapted to every situation with good humour and fortitude, they have coped without basic things such as showers, (some for up to seven days!), and have certainly kept my spirits up through their good humour and moral support. You should be proud of them.
Tomorrow morning we have our first visit to Lesiraa School – something to look forward to.
