Amazing day today – we were up at 6.20 to break camp after breakfast – drove for about four hours to Nakuru, and after lunch at the entrance to Lake Nakuru National Park we had our first game drive. Within 2 minutes we were right next to three lions fast asleep in a tree – check out the images. Probably one of my most amazing game sightings. Later on we saw rhinos, baboons, elands, waterbucks, thousands of flamingos, etc.
Sat ‘out in the bush’ right now for our first camp with nothing but a sheet of canvas between us and the wildlife – a leopard was spotted half a mile away last night – hope we get a visit tonight!
ON a personal note, I am sure the kids will tell you that our most memorable moments so far were at Longonot DEB School yesterday. The local lad who was our contact told us that our visit would be remembered for a long time by the pupils as well. Not only did they appreciate our gifts, but they also appreciated the simple fact that we were prepared to actually visit them. Dancing the Blaydon Races with them was something they will never forget. There were many emotional moments, and many tears, and I think now that we all know what this trip is really all about. Your sons and daughters conducted themselves with dignity, humility and they showed great humanity – you would have been proud of them – they were a credit to you, but more importantly a credit to British Youth.
The kids have been brilliant so far – good humour, good behaviour and good company – in fact it is more like being away with 24 friends than 24 pupils.
Diane, thankyou SO MUCH for your first gift – which I opened yesterday, and thanks for the words. I’m coping so far – not cracked up yet! Nevertheless, missing you like mad – wish you were here – love you loads.

Today we did a game drive. About 5 minutes into it we say an absolutely amazing sight – 3 lions asleep on a tree trunk! We stayed there about 10 minutes just taking it in and snapping photos. We also saw our first rhinos and the lake was absolutely covered in flamingos – they stunk! The campsite was very basic but had an amazing waterfall which was nice to listen to whilst you were getting to sleep. See you all soon xxx
